Part-time Maintenance Assistant, Grade VI
Building Services (Maintenance) Department

The Building Services (Maintenance) Department has an immediate opening for a part-time Maintenance Assistant, Grade VI. This is a 20- to 28-hour per week “non-exempt” position with a work schedule from 5:00am until 10:00am, Monday thru Friday, some weekend/and or day hours as required by Maintenance Supervisor or Library construction needs.

Current wage range is $15.68 to $22.58 per hour plus the benefits associated with part-time Level 2 employment status (including vacation and sick leave benefits and IMRF pension plan), per the current Personnel Policy.

The function of the position includes: providing full maintenance necessary for the overall operation, maintenance, and cleaning of the Library building, grounds, and furniture; and providing for the necessary adjustments in wiring, electrical power, and physical plant to accommodate technology related improvements (working in cooperation with the Network Manager).

Regular duties include: performing building maintenance and custodial work; keeping building and grounds clean and attractive; improving and repairing building facilities, furnishings, equipment, and grounds; opening and closing facilities and work areas; delivering equipment, supplies, and furniture between departments; purchasing and requisitioning supplies and equipment as assigned; providing maintenance support for programming activities for the staff and public; assisting in maintaining computer hardware and cabling; and assisting and acting in place of the Maintenance Supervisor as assigned.

Minimum qualifications: High school diploma required; special courses or training in technical subjects related to the operation and maintenance of buildings or equipment preferred; some college, technical, computer, and/or trade school training desirable; working knowledge of carpentry, painting, plumbing, and basic electricity required; some experience in building maintenance and repair including heavy duty equipment (HVAC, electrical, etc.) and basic understanding of computer hardware set up is highly desirable; ability to plan and work independently essential; manual dexterity and physical strength adequate to perform the tasks required of this position required; and must be sensitive to the public-service orientation of the library.
