Summer Programs

All Oak Lawn residents and students of Oak Lawn School Districts are invited to participate in Reading Is So Delicious! at the library from Sunday, June 3 through Sunday, August 5. 

REGISTRATION

Registration for 6th to 8th graders begins Sunday, June 3 in the Youth Services Department. Bring your library card and check out your favorite books.

 

GOALS!

Participants need to read for 18 hours to complete the program. That is only three hours each week! You may check in once a week to tell us how many hours you have read. When you reach a goal, you will receive a prize from the various prizes available, including coupons and gift certificates donated by local businesses. 

PROGRAMS

Once you have registered for the reading program, you are eligible to sign up for the programs described below. Programs are held in our Youth Services Department, unless otherwise noted. Some programs have limited attendance, so register as soon as you can!

MONDAY MOVIE CLUB

Grades 6 and up
Mondays, June 18 and 25, July 2, 9, 16, and 23; 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Registration required
Lower Level Meeting Room
Join our weekly movie club, where you’ll see a variety of movies – new, old, exciting, funny, and more. Each movie will be PG or PG-13 followed by discussion and snacks. Movie titles will be announced one month in advance.

JUNIOR FRIENDS

Grades 6 to 10
Limit 20 Participants
Registration Begins June 3
Orientation Meeting: Monday, June 11, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
This team of volunteers helps the Youth Services Department throughout the summer. All volunteers must attend the orientation, at which time you may choose to work weekly hours OR to assist with various projects and events during Summer Reading.

BOOK BUDDIES

Grades 6 to 10
Tuesdays, 11:00 to 11:30 a.m.
June 19, 26 July 3, 10, 17, and 24

Orientation Meeting: Tuesday, June 12, 11:00 a.m. to noon for older readers

Volunteers in grades 6 to 10 will read to future readers (ages 3 to 6) for a half hour each week. All older readers earn service hour credit.

CUPCAKE CHALLENGE

Grades 6 to 8
Wednesday, June 20, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Limit 30 Participants

Lower Level Meeting Room
Decorate a cupcake using frosting and edible decorations. Participants will then judge all the cupcake creations using a secret ballot. Cupcakes will be judged in various categories. Then, take your cupcake home and enjoy a sweet treat! Dessert related activities will be available for those who complete their decorating early and would like to stay for the entire program.

IRON CHEF

Grades 6 to 8
Wednesday, June 27, 1:00 to 2:00 OR 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Limit 30 Participants per session

Join us for a creative food competition! Team up and use the provided ingredients within the time limit to create a culinary masterpiece! Judges will try the dishes and select the winners. Will your team come out on top? Please be aware that some of the foods used may contain peanuts, dairy, or other food allergens.

NATURALLY EDIBLE

Grades 6 to 8
Wednesday, July 11, 11:00 a.m. to Noon

Location Wolfe Wildlife Refuge
Registration begins July 1
Just because the wildlife is eating something doesn’t mean you can eat it too! We will learn about some local wild edibles as well as the poisonous ones. Participants will meet at the Oak Lawn Park District’s Wolfe Wildlife Refuge at 109th and Laramie. 

POTATO PEOPLE

Grades 6 to 8
Wednesday, July 11, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Limit 40 Participants

Lower Level Meeting Room
Food is fun! Sign-up and create your very own Mr. Potato Head! Participants will be using fresh fruits and vegetable to complete their projects. Additional food related activities will be available for those who finish their creations early and would like to stay for the entire program.

HUNGER GAMES PROGRAM

Grades 6 to 8
Wednesday, July 18, 10:00 a.m. to Noon OR 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Limit 30 Participants per session (Participants will play in pairs; you may sign up with a partner or have one assigned to you.)

Registration begins July 1
Experience a taste of the Hunger Games! Players in teams of two, representing the Twelve Districts of Panem, will compete in a series of adventure and survival challenges similar to those from the Hunger Games series. Participants will meet at the Oak Lawn Park District’s Wolfe Wildlife Refuge at 109th and Laramie. 

TEEN GAME PROGRAM

Grades 6 to 8
Wednesday, July 25, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Registration is NOT required
Lower Level Meeting Room
Join us for a variety of Playstation, Xbox, and Wii games, include a classic arcade game tournament and delicious board games such as Apples to Apples.

RECYCLED ART

Grades 6 to 8
Thursday, July 26, 3:00 to 4:00
Limit 30 Participants per session

Paper beads, pintastic cards, and sock puppets, oh my! One person’s trash can be created into someone else’s treasure! Kids in grades 6-8 will create fabulous works of art made from recycled items, such as old magazines, socks, and buttons. 

FAMILY SPECIALS

After all your work reading and collecting prizes, you may need to relax and just laugh your troubles away. Participants under the age of seven must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is NOT required for either of the Family Special programs.

CATCH THIS JUGGLING ACT

Catch This! is a dynamic and hilarious comedic juggling duo that entertains throughout Chicago. Featuring performers Nate Beasley and Scott Sivright, Catch This! will be sure to wow you with awe-inspiring juggling and side-splitting humor. You might even catch them juggling a few books and juggling a few delicious perishables!

Dennis DeBondt Magic Show

Tuesday, July 10, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
All Ages
Lower Level Meeting Room
Dennis DeBondt has been called the best magician for family fun! by Chicago Magazine. Attendees will learn some magic, share loads of laughs, and see a kid float in the air! Trained in improvisational work at Second City, DeBondt is fast on his toes, quick with his wit, and at 6'7", he brings family fun to new heights.

 

Special Hunger Games Event and Drawing

INTER-LIBRARY HUNGER GAMES

Ages 12 to 18
Qualify June 3 to July 28; Reaping July 29; Games on August 1
From the Capitol: It’s time for the annual Hunger Games! Twenty-four will enter. One winner will survive. Each tribute (summer reading participant ages 12-18) will have his or her name entered into the Oak Lawn district’s lottery upon completing the Summer Reading Program, and every time you come to a teen program you will get the chance to enter your name again. You must finish your summer reading goal by July 28 to qualify. The Reaping (drawing) will take place July 29. The Games this year will be held at the laser tag arena in Homewood Brunswick Zone on Wednesday, August 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. Only tributes (drawing winners) and their mentor (parents) will be allowed into the training area and arena. May the odds be ever in your favor.

The last day to report and receive prizes is Sunday, August 5.
